Restaurant

The Altmarkt was the first market in Dresden and located in the heart of the settlement founded in 1200.

Impressive town houses were erected around the Altmarkt. This includes Giebelhaus No. 10, which was built as a residential house in 1544. In 1767 two floors were used as stores.

After 1824 the house was operated by various merchants until WWII. Following its destruction, the modern building "Haus Altmarkt" was constructed in 1956. The "Altmarkt Keller" arose in the basement of the "Haus Altmarkt", which became a popular meeting place for young and old, and emerged as a important part of Dresden's restaurant landscape. After opening its doors to the public, the "Haus Altmarkt" became one of the largest gastronomic establishments in the city with seating for over 700 people. Alongside the restaurant "Altmarktkeller", one could find the "Mokkabar", the "Tagescafe", and the "Tanzbar" on the first floor and the "Concert and Dance Café" on the second floor. These became popular meeting places for both locals and tourists.

Since March 1, 2002, the "Altkeller" has reopened as a Saxon-Bohemian Beerhouse in a rustic ambience. Using artistic wall paintings, we have attempted to capture the spirit of Dresden as it once was - the time of trade on the Altmarkt, the guilds and the sutlers.

The turn of the millennium inspired the idea to allow the trade with the neighboring Czech province, Bohemia, to flow into our house. Bohemian dishes and original Saxon recepies, loved by the residents of Dresden, will emerge as a culinary delight on the "Altmarkt". Selected wines from the top local winegrowers, fresh Radeberger Pilsner from the tap and Krusovice, one of the finest Bohemian beers, round off the treats.
